For 1 Batch(es) ()

  • 1 teaspoon(s) baking powder
  • 1 1/4 cup(s) flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon(s) salt
  • 2 tablespoon(s) sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2/3 cup(s) milk

Amish Funnel Cakes - Grandma Hardy Directions

  1. Beat milk with egg. Blend dry ingredients and gradually add milk mixture, beating constantly until batter is smooth.
  2. Holding your finger over the hole of a 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch hole, fill funnel with batter. Hold funnel as near surface of fat as possible, remove finger and allow batter to drop into deep fat heated to 375 degrees. Distribute batter in a circular movement, from center out, forming a spiral cake about 3 inches in diameter.
  3. Immediately replace finger on bottom of funnel and then form other cakes, as many as will float uncrowded. Fry cakes until they are puffy and golden brown, truning once.
  4. Remove with slotted spoon and put on absorbent paper to drain. Sift powdered sugar lightly over cakes, or drizzle with chocolate syrup and serve at once.
  5. These are a great "fair time" treat. Serve with strawberries or other berries, maple syrup or anything else that sounds good
